Thinking Outside of the Box

Since 1984

In a moment, you will see a video of the ‘Single Stereo Display’ in action.

Before that, you should understand what you’ll be seeing.

At the bottom there will appear two conventional  old school’ VU meters. These were all we had for years.
One for mono, and  later, two for stereo.   They came in different styles and designs, but they were
all mechanical.   The pointers had trouble moving really fast because of inertia.

At the upper part of the screen are two bargraphs;  one for left and one for right.  These have replaced
the mechanical meters for the most part, but you still have to keep track of two different bars and how far
up they are.

In the center is the Single Stereo Display.  As explained earlier,  the Right channel moves the red, and the
Left channel moves the green.  When both channels are at the same level, the mix between them produces
amber or yellow..  When a channel is louder than the other, its color shows above the amber.

How much it shows tells you how much louder that channel is.

Notice you have just ONE place to watch.  Not two meters, and not two bargraphs.  Just the one bar.
The way it appears tells you how loud the music is, and how different the channels are.
Your eyes can stay in one place all the time.

This frees you from worrying about the channel you’re NOT watching.

This demo is 7 minutes long,  and features Linda Ronstadt and Simon and Garfunkel.
There’s plenty of separation so you can see how the SSD  improves over the other meters.

Along that line, please wear headphones if you have them.   ( It helps understand the panning. )
